Shaba is part of three small adjoining savanna national reserves that lie on either side of the Northern Ewaso Ngiro River, 340km North, North East of Nairobi (Samburu, Buffalo Springs, and Shaba). They were established in 1948 as the Samburu, Isiolo Game Reserve, part of the once-extensive Marsabit National Reserve
The reserve consists of a low-lying, semi-arid plain on the southern bank of the Northern Ewaso Ngiro River. It lies 9 km east of buffalo springs national reserve, from which it is separated by the main road from Isiolo to Marsabit. The reserve was gazetted in 1974, and is administered by the Isiolo County Council.

Sarova Shaba game lodge
Built in an oasis around the natural terrain of this breathtaking volcanic desert, the Lodge is attractively laid out with chalet style rooms overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River. Natural spring water has been harnessed to ribbon its way in and out all around the property creating a beautiful landscape. The lodge offers 94 modern rooms in chalet style with a private view of the wildlife-rich banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. Each room overlooks the river where the elephants sometimes make an appearance or the crocodiles come out to lounge by the river’s banks. All chalet style rooms and suites at Sarova Shaba Game Lodge have: private balconies with close views of the river and game park, ensuite bathrooms with permanent showers and WC, running hot and cold water, razor outlets with 220 and 240 volts, beds with mosquito nets and duvets, overhead fans, tea and coffee making facilities.
Ashnil Samburu
Ashnil Samburu Camp sits in Buffalo Springs Game Reserve which takes its name from an oasis of crystal clear water at the western end of the reserve. It is separated from Samburu National Reserve by Ewaso Nyiro River and is less hilly and dense yet equally very attractive. There are a total number of 24 deluxe en-suite tents, 12 with King or Queen sized beds, 9 with twin beds and 3 with triple beds. Each of the exclusive comfortable deluxe tents gives perfect view of the Ewaso Nyiro River, surrounding beautiful landscape and all lives this brown river supports. Every spacious tent consists of a dressing area, sitting area, luggage rack and en-suite facilities to provide a memorable stay close to nature.
Elephant bedroom camp
Elephant Bedroom Camp is a tented camp. It offers luxury in a setting of breath taking beauty. It is set along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River and shaded by doum palms and other trees that make up this green belt of riverine forest. The lodge has 12 spacious tents (4 tents with king-sized double beds, 8 tents with queen-sized twin beds)
