Hell’s Gate National Park lies to the south of Lake Naivasha in Kenya. It is characterized by towering cliffs, deep gorges, rock towers, extinct volcanoes, geothermal springs, and warm temperatures, hence the name. It is one of only two parks where you can walk or cycle alongside herds of diverse wildlife without an official Kenya Wildlife Service escort.
Other interesting features to enjoy during a hells Gate visit include the rock climbing at the Fischer’s Tower, formerly a volcano’s plug or take a hike along the Njorowa Gorges. Olkaria and Hobley are extinct volcanoes that are also worth visiting; natural steam vents rise from fissures in the volcanic rock.
Set in one hundred and fifty acres of grassland studded with Acacia bushes and trees, the resort is not only home to resident giraffe, waterbuck and both Vervet and Colobus monkeys, but it is also a night stop for the hippos when they leave the lake every night to come and trim the grass on the expansive lawns. The lodge has 21 cottages built in a crescent shape, and each has 4 rooms, 2 on the ground and 2 at the top, which totals to 84 rooms. 2 of these rooms are suitable for the physically challenged. All rooms have large frontal windows, televisions, mini-bars, telephones, electronic safes, tea and coffee making facilities and spacious open air verandas.
The Naivasha Simba Lodge is situated on the banks of Lake Naivasha, the cleanest lake in the Great Rift Valley. This fresh water lake was once Nairobi’s main landing strip for the luxury Flying Boats that came all the way from London. Travelers would then proceed to Nairobi by bus. It has no known outlet, which is considered a requisite for a fresh water lake. These idyllic grounds upon which the Naivasha Simba is set, together with its countryside look make it the perfect location for conferences, wedding receptions, honeymoons and private retreats.
The world-class lodge has had the pleasure of hosting a number of important international conferences, with the Sudanese Peace Agreement that was attended by 15 heads of states and dignitaries such as Tambo Mbeki, Kofi Annan, Collin Powell and US senators. The lodges consists of 70 superior guest rooms furnished with wrought iron and mahogany furniture and have a step-down sitting area with television. They are clustered in blocks of 10 rooms, with 6 on the ground floor and 4 on the top.
